First step out of bed and your heel screams. Feels like you’re stepping on a knife. You hobble to the bathroom, walk it off for a few minutes, then it’s bearable. Until you sit for a while and stand up again – same thing.
That’s plantar fasciitis. And it’s miserable.
At Glendale Chiropractic in Denver, we treat plantar fasciitis with a combination of chiropractic care, soft tissue work, and proper foot support. As your Denver chiropractor, we’ve been providing treatment for this condition for 14 years. Most people get significant relief within a few weeks through chiropractic manipulation and chiropractic adjustment combined with other therapies.
What Plantar Fasciitis Actually Is
Your plantar fascia? It’s this thick band of tissue running along the bottom of your foot. Heel to toes. Holds up your arch. Takes the hit when you walk or run.
Gets irritated and inflamed? That’s plantar fasciitis. Tissue develops tiny tears, gets tight, hurts.
Classic sign – worst pain in the morning. That first step out of bed is brutal. Or after you’ve been sitting for a while and stand up. Move around a bit and it loosens up. But never really feels right until you fix what’s wrong.
Why Chiropractic Treatment Works for Plantar Fasciitis
Here’s what most people don’t get – your foot pain isn’t just a foot problem.
Your whole body’s connected. Ankle alignment, knee position, hip function, lower back – all of it affects how your foot hits the ground. If something’s off up the chain, your foot compensates. That compensation causes stress. That stress causes plantar fasciitis.
We look at the whole picture. Check your spine. Check your hips. Check your knees and ankles. Find what’s not moving right or not aligned properly. Fix that, and often the foot pain gets way better because your foot’s not compensating anymore.
Then we work on the foot itself. Adjust the ankle and foot joints. Break up adhesions in the tissue. Get everything moving right again.
Denver Lifestyles and Plantar Fasciitis
Living in Denver means you’re probably pretty active. Hiking Flatirons on weekends. Running Wash Park. Walking Cherry Creek Trail. Maybe doing a 5K or half marathon.
All that activity is great. But it also puts stress on your feet. Especially if you go from sitting at a desk all week to hiking 8 miles on Saturday. Your feet aren’t ready for it.
See it all the time with Denver folks. Office workers during the week, outdoor warriors on weekends. Feet can’t handle the sudden change in activity. Plantar fasciitis develops.
Also see it with people who stand all day. Teachers at Denver Public Schools. Nurses at the hospitals. Retail workers. Service industry people. Being on concrete floors for 8-10 hours wrecks your feet.
And Denver’s runners – tons of them. Running on pavement, running on trails, training for races. Great for cardio, hard on feet.
How We Treat Plantar Fasciitis
Chiropractic Adjustment of Spine and Hips – We adjust your spine, hips, knees, ankles. Get everything aligned so your foot isn’t compensating for problems elsewhere. Makes a bigger difference than you’d think.
Foot and Ankle Adjustments – Yes, we adjust feet. Lots of little bones and joints in there. When they’re not moving right, plantar fascia gets stressed. Adjusting them takes pressure off the tissue.
Soft Tissue Therapy – Your plantar fascia’s tight and full of adhesions. We break those up through targeted massage and soft tissue techniques. Also work on your calf muscles – when those are tight, it pulls on the plantar fascia through the Achilles tendon. This manual therapy approach is more targeted than general massage.
Stretching and Exercises – Show you specific stretches for your calf and plantar fascia. Also strengthening exercises for your foot. You do these at home. Critical part of getting better and staying better. Similar to what you’d get in physical therapy, but focused specifically on your issue.
Foot Orthotics – Proper foot support makes a huge difference. Sometimes over-the-counter orthotics work fine. Other times you need custom orthotics made specifically for your feet. We assess what you need.
Laser Therapy – Reduces inflammation, speeds healing. Works great for plantar fasciitis combined with everything else.
Shockwave Therapy – Some severe cases benefit from shockwave therapy. We don’t have this equipment in our office, but we can refer you to facilities that do if it makes sense for your case. Shockwave therapy uses acoustic waves to stimulate healing in the tissue. Research shows it can be effective for chronic plantar fasciitis that hasn’t responded to other treatment.
When to Consider Shockwave Therapy
For most people, the treatment approach we offer – chiropractic care, soft tissue therapy, orthotics, exercises – works well. But if you’ve had plantar fasciitis for a long time and nothing’s helping, shockwave therapy might be worth trying.
It’s not our first recommendation because it’s expensive and you need multiple sessions. But for stubborn cases? Can make the difference.
If we think you might benefit from shockwave therapy, we’ll discuss it and refer you to a facility in Denver that offers it. We stay in communication with them about your care.
Foot Orthotics – OTC vs Custom
Let’s talk about foot support because it matters.
Your feet might not be supporting your arches properly. Could be flat feet, high arches, or just poor mechanics. Either way, your plantar fascia is working overtime trying to stabilize your foot. That’s part of what’s causing the problem.
Over-the-Counter Orthotics – Work for a lot of people. Good quality OTC inserts provide arch support and cushioning. Way better than the insole that came with your shoes. Brands like Superfeet, Powerstep – decent options. Can run you $30-150.
If your plantar fasciitis is mild to moderate and your feet are fairly normal, OTC might be all you need.
Custom Orthotics – Made specifically for your feet. We take a scan, send it to a lab, they make orthotics that match your exact foot shape and correct your specific issues.
Cost more – usually $400-500. But they’re better. More supportive, more precise, last longer. If you’ve got significant biomechanical problems or severe plantar fasciitis, custom orthotics often make the difference between getting better and staying stuck.
We assess your feet and recommend what makes sense. Not pushing expensive custom orthotics on everyone. Some people genuinely need them. Others do fine with OTC.
Upfront about costs either way. You decide what fits your budget.
What to Expect from Treatment
First visit, we examine you. Look at your feet, ankles, legs, hips, spine. Check how you walk. See where the problems are. This comprehensive care approach helps us understand the full picture of your injury.
Then we start treatment. Usually involves adjustments, soft tissue therapy, and recommendations for orthotics and home exercises. Treatment is personalized based on your specific injury and needs.
Most people start feeling better within 2-3 weeks of consistent care. Not completely fixed, but noticeably better. Morning pain less severe. Walking doesn’t hurt as much.
Full resolution? Usually takes 6-8 weeks of consistent treatment. Some people faster, some slower. Depends how long you’ve had it and how bad the injury is.
Chronic cases that have been going on for months or years? Takes longer. But still fixable with the right treatment approach.
Why It Takes Time to Heal
Plantar fascia heals slowly. Blood supply to that area isn’t great. Tissue is thick and dense. Plus you’re on your feet every day, constantly re-stressing it.
Can’t just rest it completely unless you want to lay in bed for two months. Not realistic.
So healing happens gradually while you’re still using your feet. That’s why consistent treatment matters. We’re helping it heal while you’re still walking around.
Common Causes We See
Did too much too fast – Started training for a race. Decided to hike every weekend. Joined a bootcamp. Your feet weren’t ready. Overuse injury waiting to happen.
Crap shoes – Wearing flats with zero support. Shoes that should’ve been tossed a year ago. Running in whatever was on sale instead of what your foot needs. Sets you up for injury.
Carrying extra weight – More weight equals more stress on feet. Just how it is. Losing some helps. A lot.
Tight calves – So common. Tight calves pull on your Achilles. Achilles pulls on your plantar fascia. Everything’s connected. Everything’s tight. Everything hurts. This biomechanical issue leads to injury.
Weird feet – Flat feet. Super high arches. Changes how you absorb impact. Makes you more prone to this injury.
Getting older – Happens most in people 40-60. Tissue’s not as elastic as it used to be. More prone to getting injured.
On your feet all day – Teachers, nurses, retail. Anyone standing on hard floors for hours. Constant stress. Your feet eventually say enough. Repetitive strain injury.
What Doesn’t Work
Just resting – Yeah, feels better when you’re off it. Then you walk again and boom, still hurts. Didn’t fix anything.
Only stretching – Stretching helps some. But by itself? Not enough. Won’t fix the real problem.
Cortisone shots – Quick relief. Then it comes back. Get too many and you can actually weaken the tissue. Not a fix.
Pretending it’s not there – Doesn’t magically disappear. Gets worse. Sticks around for months. Years even. Then you start walking weird to avoid the pain and mess up your knees and hips too.
Surgery – Last thing you want. Success rate’s so-so. Long recovery. Try literally everything else first.
Keeping It from Coming Back
Once you’re better, don’t want it back. Here’s your wellness plan:
Keep doing the exercises – Those stretches and strengthening things we show you. Keep at them even when you feel fine. Maintains your foot health long-term.
Decent shoes – Actual support. Not worn down to nothing. Replace them when they’re shot. Don’t walk around barefoot on hard floors all day.
Actually use your orthotics – Got orthotics? Wear them. In your regular shoes, running shoes, whatever. They don’t work sitting in your closet.
Build up slow – Training for something? Don’t jump from couch to crazy. Build gradually. Protects your overall health.
Lose some weight if you need to – Less pounding on your feet every step. Better for your whole body’s health.
Get checked periodically – Keep your body aligned so your feet aren’t overworking to compensate for other problems.
Working with Runners
Got a lot of runners in Denver. It’s a running city. From casual joggers to serious marathoners training for Boston.
Plantar fasciitis is super common in runners. Repetitive impact, lots of mileage, inadequate recovery. Your feet take a beating. Running injuries need proper treatment.
We work with runners all the time. Get them out of pain and back to running through targeted treatment and care. Sometimes means modifying training temporarily. Sometimes means fixing running form. Always means addressing footwear and support.
Many runners need custom orthotics because OTC doesn’t provide enough support for the miles they’re putting in.
We don’t just tell you to stop running. We figure out how to get you better while keeping you as active as possible. Injury recovery doesn’t mean quitting what you love.
Hiking and Trail Stuff
Denver’s surrounded by trails. People are out there every weekend. Red Rocks, up to Mount Evans, foothills everywhere.
Hiking’s awesome but beats up your feet. Uneven ground, going uphill, going downhill, carrying a pack. All hard on the plantar fascia.
Got plantar fasciitis? Don’t have to quit hiking. But maybe back off a bit while you heal. And get real hiking boots with actual support. Not your old tennis shoes.
If you’re doing serious miles on trails, custom orthotics in your boots make a massive difference. Not just for plantar fasciitis – for everything.
Standing Jobs and Plantar Fasciitis
If you’re on your feet all day on hard floors, plantar fasciitis is almost inevitable without proper care and support.
Teachers standing on classroom floors. Nurses and healthcare workers in hospitals. Retail employees. Restaurant servers and bartenders. Construction workers. All at high risk.
Can’t change your job. But you can change your footwear and add orthotics. Makes a huge difference. Preventive care matters.
Also recommend taking sitting breaks when possible. Elevating your feet at home after work. Ice if they’re really inflamed.
We’ve treated tons of Denver teachers, nurses, and service workers. Get them back to functioning without constant foot pain through proper treatment and ongoing care.
Questions People Ask
Can chiropractic really help foot pain? Yes. We’re not just adjusting your back. We work on your whole kinetic chain including your feet. Plus addressing biomechanical issues that contribute to the problem. Treatment includes soft tissue massage and targeted therapy.
How long until I feel better? Most people notice improvement in 2-3 weeks of treatment. Full resolution usually 6-8 weeks.
Do I need custom orthotics or will OTC work? Depends on your feet and severity of the problem. We assess and recommend what you actually need.
Can I still exercise while treating plantar fasciitis? Usually yes, with modifications. We help you figure out what’s okay and what’s not during treatment.
Will it come back? Can, if you go back to the same behaviors that caused it. Following prevention strategies and ongoing care keeps it away.
What if chiropractic doesn’t help? Sometimes it doesn’t, though that’s rare. If you’re not improving with our treatment, we refer you to a podiatrist or orthopedist for additional evaluation. Some cases may benefit from shockwave therapy or other advanced treatments.
What about shockwave therapy? We don’t have shockwave therapy equipment in our office, but we can refer you to facilities that offer it if you’re not responding to conservative treatment. Shockwave therapy can be effective for stubborn cases.
When to Come In
Don’t wait until you can barely walk. The earlier you address plantar fasciitis, the faster it heals.
Come in if:
- Heel pain first thing in the morning
- Pain after sitting that improves with movement
- Pain along the bottom of your foot near the heel
- Pain that’s been going on more than a week or two
- Pain that’s getting worse
- Pain that’s affecting your activities
Earlier treatment means faster recovery.
What to Bring
- Shoes you wear most often
- Running or athletic shoes if relevant
- Any orthotics you currently use
- List of activities you do regularly
We need to see your footwear to assess what might be contributing to the problem.
Cost and Insurance
Most insurance covers chiropractic treatment for plantar fasciitis. We’ll verify your coverage.
Custom orthotics sometimes covered by insurance, sometimes not. Depends on your plan. We check before ordering.
OTC orthotics aren’t covered but they’re affordable – $30-150.

Amy – Marathon runner. Plantar fasciitis knocked her out of training for three months. Tried stretching, ice, rest. Nothing worked. Came in, got adjusted, worked on her calves, got custom orthotics. Back to running within six weeks. Finished her marathon.
Dave – Teacher at DPS. On his feet all day on concrete. Heel pain so bad he could barely walk in the mornings. We adjusted his spine and feet, got him into good OTC orthotics, showed him stretches. Pain reduced by 80% in a month. Can teach without hurting now.
Maria – Hikes every weekend. Started getting heel pain that wouldn’t quit. We found her hips and ankles were out of alignment, causing her foot to overpronate. Adjusted everything, got her into custom orthotics for her hiking boots. Pain gone. Back on the trails.
